A magnificent and highly decorative true pair of late 19th-century Italian Neo-Renaissance Majolica porcelain table lamps. Featuring a classic baluster silhouette, each lamp is intricately hand-painted with vivid Renaissance Revival grotesque motifs, including vibrant mythological chimeras, winged griffins, and horned sea-satyrs set against a brilliant white glazed ground. The central body of each lamp features a grand, shield-shaped cartouche framing an exquisite black-and-white grisaille cameo of a playful cherub/putto. Grounded on heavy, ornate cast-brass acanthus-leaf scroll feet and capped with matching foliate collars, these lamps offer a commanding architectural presence.
Authentic Majolica: These are genuine 19th-century Majolica tin-glazed earthenware pieces, boasting the traditional rich glazes, deep coloration, and historical prestige that collectors actively search for.
A True Pair: Finding authentic 19th-century Majolica decorative lamps in an original, unbroken pair is increasingly rare and highly coveted by interior designers.
Masterful Grisaille Detail: The fine, monochromatic brushwork on the central cherub panels offers a sophisticated contrast to the otherwise bold and colorful palette.
Sculptural Grandeur: The combination of classical mythic artistry and heavy, scrolling brass bases ensures these lamps command attention even when unlit.
Origin: Italy
Materials: Authentic Tin-Glazed Majolica Porcelain / Earthenware, Cast Brass Mounts.
Details: Every inch features fine hand-painted details, from the scaled, winged tritons on the slender neck to the brilliantly plumed mythological beasts flanking the base.
Dating from the late 19th century, these lamps celebrate the Neo-Renaissance revival that swept across Europe. The style draws directly from the 16th-century Raffaellesco and 'grotesque' fresco styles popularised by Raphael, which were famously adapted onto historic Urbino majolica pottery. These intricate patterns were highly prized by grand Victorian estates for their rich storytelling and academic luxury.
Perfect for the 'Grandmillennial' or maximalist interior, this pair brings instant character, color, and historical narrative to a space. They act as bridges between fine art and functional lighting, standing out beautifully against deep, moody wall tones or crisp, minimalist backdrops.
Flanking a grand fireplace mantelpiece or a large architectural mirror.
Symmetrically grounding a long hallway console table or dining room.
Bringing high-end boutique luxury to a principal bedroom when placed on matching nightstands.
Lampshades are not included but can be purchased direct from us at Shackleton Fox. As styled in pictures, we highly recommend pairing these intricate bases with our Medium Empire Lampshade in Ecru with Stucco. The structured pleating and understated, elegant tones of the Ecru fabric perfectly balance the fluid, colorful Renaissance artistry of the porcelain bases without competing for attention.
This pair has undergone complete, sympathetic mechanical and electrical restoration in our workshop. Both lamps have been rewired from the ground up using premium, period-correct twisted fabric-covered three-core flex and fitted with new brass B22 switched bayonet bulb holders. Fully PAT tested, completely safe, and ready for immediate display.

Presented in exceptional antique condition. The Majolica bodies are remarkably well-preserved with no chips, structural cracks, or restoration lines; the hand-painted glazes remain incredibly vibrant and crisp with only microscopic crazing consistent with true age. The heavy brass bases and collars retain a handsome, soft golden patina with very light, authentic oxidation in the crevasses.
