Additional Information
A Magnificent Late 19th-Century Cobalt Porcelain & Ormolu Table Lamp
Retailer: C.R. Dibben, 170 Sloane Street, London

An imposing and highly decorative late Victorian table lamp, originally conceived as a grand oil lamp. The piece features a monumental baluster-form body in a rich, mirror-finish Cobalt Blue glaze—a color historically favored by European royalty and the British aristocracy for its depth and brilliance.

The porcelain is set within exceptional Aesthetic Movement gilt-brass (ormolu) mounts. The base is particularly noteworthy, featuring a finely cast "bundled reed" or "bamboo" gallery—a signature motif of the late 19th-century fascination with Japonisme—resting upon a heavy, polished square plinth. The lamp is capped with a stepped brass shoulder and retains its original period character, having been sympathetically converted for electricity.

The neck is clearly stamped with the prestigious maker’s mark:

"C.R. DIBBEN, 170 SLOANE ST, LONDON"

C.R. Dibben was a premier "Artistic Furnisher" and specialist in high-end lighting, trading from 170 Sloane Street during the zenith of the late Victorian era (c. 1880–1900). Positioned in the heart of Belgravia, Dibben catered to an elite clientele, providing bespoke furnishings for London’s most opulent townhouses.

During this period, it was common for prestigious retailers like Dibben to source the finest porcelain bodies—often from renowned factories such as Minton, Coalport, or Sèvres—and mount them in high-quality brass or silver-plate to be sold as luxury oil lamps. This piece represents a quintessential example of the "London Style," blending traditional European elegance with the progressive design elements of the Aesthetic Movement.
