Additional Information
A Continental Naïve Giltwood Pricket Candlestick, 18th Century

A tall and atmospheric giltwood pricket candlestick of ecclesiastical origin. This piece is a fascinating example of provincial Baroque design, possessing a unique sculptural presence.

The piece exhibits a charmingly vigorous, hand-carved quality, featuring a tapered column and a carved acanthus leaf cup.

The column sections show a characteristic misalignment at the central join, a hallmark of its naïve, non-metropolitan workshop origins that adds significant folk-art appeal.

A sturdy tri-form plinth supported by three hand-carved paw feet.

Dealer’s Comments

"In an age of mass-produced perfection, there is something deeply moving about a piece that shows the 'hand of the maker' so clearly. This candlestick wasn't made by a machine or a high-city workshop; it was carved with ambition in a provincial setting. The misalignment and the flaking gold are not defects—they are the patina of time itself. It is a wonderfully theatrical object."

Condition Report

The original water-gilding over gesso is in a beautifully distressed state, with honest flaking and "rub-through" that reveals the warm terracotta bole and timber beneath.

The piece shows signs of historic, dormant woodworm flight holes, providing further evidence of its 18th-century age.

Structurally sound with a pleasingly irregular, hand-hewn silhouette.
