An exceptionally handsome pair of late Victorian mahogany footstools, recently expertly re-upholstered to the highest standard. Each stool features a beautifully figured mahogany frame with a soft, natural lustre, raised on four original hand-turned "bun" feet. The stools have been traditionally stuffed to provide a firm yet comfortable profile, finished in a high-quality neutral fabric.
A hallmark of the superior craftsmanship in this restoration is the matching double-piping edging, which provides a crisp, tailored finish to the upholstery line. The internal frames are robust, featuring original webbing and hand-blocked corner supports, ensuring these pieces remain as functional as they are decorative.
Low footstools of this variety were essential components of the 19th-century British drawing room, designed both for comfort and to protect one's feet from the draughts of uncarpeted floors. By the late Victorian era, the use of turned bun feet became a celebrated nod to earlier William IV designs, blending sturdiness with a refined, understated elegance that transitioned well into Edwardian interiors.
"Finding a true pair of stools from this period is increasingly difficult; they were so often separated over the decades. What I particularly love about this set is the marriage of the rich, warm mahogany against the cool, modern neutrality of the new upholstery. They possess that wonderful 'squat' Victorian proportion that sits perfectly under a library table or flanking a fireplace. The double-piping is a lovely, expensive detail that elevates them from simple furniture to a statement of quality."
The mahogany frames are in excellent antique condition, with minor age-related marks that provide an authentic patina. The bun feet are original and sit perfectly level.
Newly and professionally re-upholstered.
The frames have been tightened where necessary and the internal webbing is in excellent, renewed order.
