This rare surviving pair of stools embodies the refined, understated elegance of the late 19th-century British home. Designed during an era that valued both robust construction and tactile luxury, they serve as the perfect finishing touch for a classic library or a contemporary lounge.
The frames are crafted from solid, richly figured mahogany. The wood has aged to a deep, warm honey-bronze with a natural lustre that highlights the superior quality of the timber used in the late Victorian period.
Each stool is raised on four original hand-turned "bun" feet—a design choice that echoed the sturdy William IV aesthetic. These feet provide a low, grounded profile, originally intended to keep feet away from the cold drafts of uncarpeted Victorian floors.
The stools have been stripped to the frame and expertly re-upholstered. The use of a high-quality neutral fabric ensures they complement any color palette, while the double-piping edging—a hallmark of bespoke upholstery—provides a crisp, high-end finish that defines the stools' silhouette.
"Finding a true pair of stools from this period is increasingly difficult; they were so often separated over the decades. What I particularly love about this set is the marriage of the rich, warm mahogany against the cool, modern neutrality of the new upholstery. They possess that wonderful 'squat' Victorian proportion that sits perfectly under a library table or flanking a fireplace. The double-piping is a lovely, expensive detail that elevates them from simple furniture to a statement of quality."
The mahogany frames are in excellent antique condition, with minor age-related marks that provide an authentic patina. The bun feet are original and sit perfectly level.
Newly and professionally re-upholstered.
The frames have been tightened where necessary and the internal webbing is in excellent, renewed order.
