Additional Information
A Pair of Early 19th Century Gilded Pelican Wall Sconces

An elegant and highly decorative pair of early 19th century wall sconces, finely carved in wood and richly water-gilded, modelled in the form of pelicans in repose. Each bird stands upon a spherical base, its wings delicately detailed and its sinuous, scrolling candle arm terminating in a stylised foliate nozzle.

The pelican, long revered as a symbol of self-sacrifice and devotion, was a popular motif in both ecclesiastical and aristocratic interiors during the late Georgian and early Regency periods. These sculptural sconces retain a beautifully mellowed gilded surface, with pleasing signs of age that enhance their sculptural presence and authenticity.

Balanced in proportion and striking in silhouette, they would make a dramatic statement flanking a chimney piece, mirror, or architectural niche, and sit comfortably within both classical and contemporary interiors.

Continental, circa 1800–1820

Condition Report

Overall in very good condition, consistent with age and use. The carved wood structure remains sound, with the original gilded surface displaying an attractive, gently worn patina throughout. One pelican has a small historic chip to the tip of the right wing, which has been professionally colour-matched and gilt to blend seamlessly with the surrounding surface and is not visually intrusive. Minor surface wear and small losses in keeping with early 19th century gilded objects.
