A Rare Pair of Brass Candlesticks, Attributed to the Margaret Gilmour School
Early 20th Century

This striking pair of brass candlesticks is attributed to the Margaret Gilmour School, one of the most important centres of British Arts & Crafts metalwork in the early 20th century.

Boldly architectural in form, each candlestick is constructed from hand-worked brass, with twin upright supports rising from a rectangular base and terminating in stylised candle sockets. The design is both functional and sculptural, displaying the hallmark restraint, honesty of materials, and emphasis on craftsmanship associated with the Arts & Crafts movement.

Each example is centred by a riveted brass plaque applied with a stylised letter “B”, likely denoting a specific commission, chapel, or institutional setting. The construction, proportions, and detailing strongly align with documented metalwork produced by students and workshops connected to the Margaret Gilmour School, where ecclesiastical and utilitarian metal objects formed a significant part of the curriculum.

The brass surfaces retain a soft, original patina, with gentle toning and light surface wear consistent with age and careful use. There is no evidence of later polishing or over-restoration, allowing the material to speak honestly and with quiet authority.

Circa 1900–1920

The Margaret Gilmour School played a pivotal role in the British Arts & Crafts movement, placing emphasis on traditional hand skills, integrity of design, and the revival of ecclesiastical craftsmanship. Metalwork produced within this milieu often combined austere geometry with subtle decorative detail, frequently intended for chapels, schools, or private devotional interiors.

Candlesticks of this type reflect the movement’s rejection of excess ornament in favour of proportion, utility, and visible construction. Surviving pairs with institutional or ecclesiastical associations are increasingly scarce and highly sought after.

Dealer’s Comment

An exceptionally strong and architectural pair, with a quiet confidence that sits perfectly within both Arts & Crafts and contemporary interiors. The attribution to the Margaret Gilmour School is compelling, and the presence of the applied letter adds intrigue and individuality. Honest, untouched, and increasingly difficult to find in matched pairs.

Condition Report

In very good condition, consistent with age and use.

The brass surfaces display an attractive, original patina with light surface wear, minor marks, and gentle toning throughout. All elements are structurally sound, with riveted joints secure and stable. No signs of later polishing, repair, or restoration. Overall, a clean and honest pair that presents exceptionally well.
