Additional Information
A Swedish Carved Wooden Candlestick, Circa 1870

A finely carved and beautifully patinated Swedish candlestick dating to the late 19th century, circa 1870. Executed in pine and retaining its original painted surface, now worn and softly distressed with time, revealing underlying layers of gesso and earlier tones which lend the piece a superb depth and character.

The elegantly turned baluster stem rises from a shaped and faceted base, each panel gently curved and terminating in a scalloped foot. The carving is of particularly good quality, with a pleasing proportion and symmetry that speaks to provincial Swedish craftsmanship of the Gustavian tradition, with echoes of earlier Baroque influence in the exaggerated volutes and decorative lotus knop.

The paint surface is untouched, with a lovely dry chalky texture — pale grey with remnants of ivory and warm ochre tones coming through. Areas of natural wear and oxidation add to the candlestick’s charm and authenticity. The top retains its original wrought iron pricket, suitable for securing a wax candle.

These tall, architectural candlesticks were traditionally used in Swedish churches and manor houses, often as a pair flanking an altar or sideboard. Now highly decorative as single sculptural elements, they make striking interior accents either on a console, centre table, or fireplace mantel.

Condition Report

The candlestick remains structurally sound and stable, with no evidence of repairs or replacements to the main body or base. It stands evenly and is well-balanced.

Retains its original painted surface, now attractively distressed with age. Areas of flaking, rubbing, and surface losses reveal underlying gesso and earlier paint layers, contributing to a richly textured, timeworn appearance. No evidence of overpainting or restoration. Candlestick has been given a polish with beeswax to reduce flaking.

Wear is consistent with age and use, including minor abrasions, small chips, and oxidation particularly around the base and edges. The surface has a dry, matte quality typical of Swedish painted furniture of the period.
