This sophisticated pair of 19th-century French gilt wood table lamps exudes classical charm and a wonderful sense of history. Originally designed as grand altar or salon candlesticks, they have been sensitively converted into functional table lamps while retaining their original sculptural integrity.
The lamps feature a graceful, tapered stem rising from an ornate, gadrooned bulbous base. The decoration is quintessentially Neoclassical, with hand-carved foliate motifs and tiered circular footings. The gilt finish has aged beautifully, revealing a rich, warm "bole" underneath that adds depth and a sought-after authenticity to the patina. A striking touch of original red pigment at the base provides a vibrant contrast, highlighting the intricate carving and the age of the wood.
In the 19th century, gilt wood candlesticks of this stature were often found in French ecclesiastical settings or grand châteaux. The use of wood rather than metal allowed for deeper, more expressive carving, which was then sealed with gesso and layered with gold leaf. These pieces are highly valued today for their "soft" aesthetic, which offers a more organic warmth compared to colder brass or bronze alternatives.
"What I find most appealing about this pair is the 'honest' wear to the gilding. You can see the history of the pieces in the way the gold has softened over time. The proportions are excellent—tall enough to make a statement on a sideboard or console table, yet refined enough not to overwhelm the space. The red accenting at the base is a particularly charming detail that suggests a sophisticated provincial origin."
These lamps are presented in excellent, ready-to-use condition.
Both lamps have been fully and professionally rewired using high-quality braided 3-core silk flex in a complementary bronze tone. They have been fitted with quality British components and have successfully passed a PAT inspection for safety.
As genuine 19th-century items, they exhibit a beautiful age-related patina. There is some minor rubbing and 'chipping' to the gilt finish, particularly around the bases and edges, which is entirely consistent with their age and confirms their authentic antique status.
The lamps are currently paired with pleated silk-style cream shades that complement their classical form. Shades sold separately.
