An Exceptional Regency Gilt-Bronze Oil Lamp, Architectural in Form and Richly Ornamented

A highly impressive Regency period gilt-bronze lamp, originally conceived as an oil lamp and subsequently converted to electricity, executed in a boldly architectural form characteristic of the early 19th century. The triangular base is raised on finely cast gilt scroll feet and enriched on each face with a superbly modelled pelican in high relief, its outspread wings framing a cluster of grapes — a classical emblem of sacrifice, devotion and abundance.

Rising from the base are three richly ornamented columns, each standing on lion’s feet and surmounted by a pair of finely cast sphinxes. These Egyptianising motifs reflect the profound influence of classical scholarship and archaeological discovery on Regency design, particularly in the wake of the Napoleonic campaigns in Egypt and the subsequent publication of the Description de l’Égypte, which significantly shaped European decorative arts of the period.

The columns frame a central stem supporting a foliate capital, originally intended to house the oil reservoir and burner and now sensitively adapted for modern use. The lamp retains a superb original surface, with deep, dark patination contrasting beautifully against the burnished gilding, lending the piece considerable visual authority and sculptural depth.

Such lamps were luxury objects, intended for the grand interiors of townhouses and country houses alike, embodying the Regency fascination with antiquity, symbolism and architectural form. Today, this piece stands as a compelling example of Regency decorative art, equally suited to a traditional setting or as a dramatic focal point within a contemporary interior.

English, Regency period, circa 1810–1825.

Condition Report

Overall in very good condition, consistent with age and use. There is some rubbing to the bronze surface, resulting in areas of lighter and darker patination, which enhances the depth and character of the piece. Minor tarnishing to the gilt is present in places, commensurate with age. The lamp has been fully rewired, PAT tested and is ready for use.
