Additional Information
An 1853 Japanese Imari Porcelain Table Lamp – From Oil to Illumination

A piece where art and history meet in perfect poise — this exquisite Japanese Imari table lamp began life in 1853 as an oil lamp, its porcelain vessel hand-painted with the vibrancy and precision that define the finest Imari ware. Professionally converted for electricity, it retains all the grace of its original form while offering the practicality of modern light.

The body is a rich canvas of deep cobalt, iron red, and soft white, each hue brushed with a sure and knowing hand. Delicate florals, stylised trees, and rhythmic geometric borders encircle the lamp in alternating panels — miniature landscapes where garden fences and blossoming boughs speak of peace, prosperity, and harmony with nature.

Imari porcelain, born in the kilns of Arita in the early 17th century, captured the imagination of Europe through the trade routes of the Dutch East India Company. By the 19th century, its bold yet balanced designs were the prized possessions of collectors across continents — admired for their unique blend of Japanese artistry and export elegance.

This example is mounted in polished brass of fine quality, the base solid and shaped to complement the porcelain’s profile, with a twisted fabric cord in keeping with its period charm. The date 1853, proudly marked, roots the piece in its historic moment — an object both functional and decorative, equally at home in the collection of a connoisseur or as the statement jewel of a well-appointed room.
