A truly commanding piece of mid-to-late 20th-century lighting, this tall, three-arm silver-plated candelabrum-lamp epitomises the grand English country house aesthetic. Recently re-plated to a mirror finish, the lamp marries the stately silhouette of a traditional George II style candelabrum with the functional brilliance of modern electrification. Its substantial proportions and exceptional weight suggest a piece of significant quality, likely commissioned for a grand dining hall or a prestigious library.
The architecture of this piece is defined by a sophisticated play on classical geometry and fluid Rococo-inspired curves.
The Stem & Base: Rising from a sturdy, stepped hexafoil base, the stem begins with a cinched waist that flares into a graceful, tapering fluted column. This verticality provides a sense of lightness that belies its solid, heavy construction.
The Branches: The central "light" is flanked by two scrolling arms, expertly cast with a subtle reeded texture. These arms sweep outwards and upwards in a dramatic arc, terminating in wide, lobed drip pans and classic urn-shaped nozzles.
The Centerpiece: The central column continues upward through a series of balanced knops and moldings, ensuring the lamp retains a pyramidal harmony that draws the eye toward the trio of lights.
Every curve has been considered to ensure the lamp remains visually balanced whether viewed from across a room or as a centerpiece on a sprawling mahogany table. The interplay between the crisp, newly plated silver and the undulating shadows of the fluting creates a rhythmic, shimmering effect.
Drawing inspiration from the silver designs of the mid-18th century—specifically the works of renowned London silversmiths like Paul de Lamerie—this lamp was crafted in England during the mid-20th century. During this era, high-end makers specialised in "re-imagining" classical silver forms for the electrified home, ensuring that the weight and "feel" of the piece matched the standards of antique originals. It has been meticulously restored and newly silver-plated to ensure it remains a pristine heirloom for the next generation.
