An 18th-Century Pair of Baroque Giltwood Candlestick Lamps

A magnificent pair of 18th-century Baroque giltwood candlesticks, now sensitively converted to table lamps, radiating the grandeur and theatricality of the period. Once guardians of candlelight in a sacred or aristocratic setting, they now cast their glow through the gentle hum of electricity, retaining every ounce of their historical dignity.

The boldly turned baluster columns rise from voluminous bases upon small bun feet, each surface richly carved with scrolling ornament in the exuberant manner of the Baroque. Layers of gold leaf, mellowed by centuries into a deep, honeyed patina, catch the light with a living warmth, revealing the hand of the carver and the luxury of their original commission.

Baroque design, born in Italy and embraced across Europe from the early 17th to mid-18th centuries, was a language of power and devotion — opulent, dynamic, and charged with movement. These lamps stand as eloquent survivors of that tradition, their transformation from candlesticks a masterclass in sympathetic adaptation, preserving the spirit of the past while embracing the needs of the present.

Equally at home in a richly appointed drawing room or lending gravitas to a contemporary interior, they offer not only illumination but a tangible link to the splendour of Europe’s golden age of decorative art.

Condition Report

Both lamps are in very good antique condition, retaining their original giltwood finish with a beautifully aged patina. The carved surfaces show minor wear, small chips, and light rubbing consistent with age, enhancing their authenticity and character. The gold leaf has mellowed to a warm, rich tone, with subtle variations in color.

Professionally converted from candlesticks to table lamps and fully rewired using British materials to meet current UK electrical standards. PAT tested for safety, fitted with modern brass bulb holders, and ready for immediate use.
