Additional Information
A Rare & Imposing Pair of Late 19th-Century 'High Gothic' Carved Oak Lion Lamps

An exceptional and rare confronted pair of late Victorian sculptural table lamps. Each lamp features a masterfully hand-carved oak lion in a seated (sejant) pose, exuding the regal authority and "Baronial" charm of the English Gothic Revival.

The craftsmanship is of the highest order; the lions are rendered with extraordinary anatomical precision, from the muscular tension in their forelegs to the vigorous, flowing "wavy" curls of their manes. The timber is dense, old-growth English oak, which has developed a deep, honeyed patina over the last 140 years.

In a sophisticated juxtapostion of materials, each lion is mounted upon a substantial, hand-honed grey slate plinth. The cool, architectural lines of the slate provide a modernist foundation that elevates the warm, organic texture of the wood. The lamps are crowned with rare frosted glass flame shades, which sit upon turned oak standards, designed to mimic the ceremonial torches found in 19th-century grand halls.

Dating to circa 1885, these lamps were produced during the height of the Aesthetic Movement. This era saw a transition where functional domestic objects were treated as fine sculpture. The lion motif, heavily inspired by the romanticism of the Lion of Lucerne, was a favorite for library and study settings in Victorian manor houses.

Originally conceived during the transition from gas to early electric lighting, the "flame" silhouette became a prestigious symbol of light and knowledge. Finding a true, mirrored pair (one lion facing left, one facing right) in this scale and condition is increasingly difficult for the modern collector.
