This imposing table lamp is an exceptional piece of Late 19th-Century domestic lighting, perfectly capturing the Victorian era's love for opulent materials and classical architectural form. Originally an oil or kerosene lamp, it has been sensitively and fully converted to a safe, modern electrical fitting.
The lamp's form is drawn directly from Neoclassical architectural principles. The highly detailed Corinthian Capital is a work of superior casting, featuring the classic acanthus leaf motifs popularised during the 19th-century revival of classical Greek and Roman design. This style communicated wealth, education, and discerning taste in the affluent Victorian home.
The substantial column is made from magnificent Cranberry Glass, also known as "Gold Ruby" glass. This prestigious colour was created by adding gold chloride to the molten glass—a notoriously expensive and complex process that was perfected in the mid-19th century. The lamp's cranberry element provides a rich, deep ruby luminescence that is stunning both when the light is off and when it is illuminated.
The solid brass mounts, including the decorative capital and the stepped square base, exhibit a high level of craftsmanship, indicative of a quality British workshop of the period (c. 1890–1910).
While possessing all the charm of a genuine antique, this lamp has been brought seamlessly into the 21st century. Its generous scale ensures it makes a dramatic focal point, suitable for a large side table, console, or library desk.
This lamp is offered in excellent, fully restored condition, making it uniquely functional and safe for immediate use in any contemporary setting.
