18th Century Carved Giltwood & Gesso Coat of Arms with Eagle – Rare Decorative Crest on Metal Stand

A stunning and rare 18th-century carved giltwood and gesso coat of arms, this exceptional piece exemplifies the grandeur and craftsmanship of early European heraldic art. Rich in symbolic detail, it likely originates from continental Europe—possibly Italy, France, or the Germanic regions—where heraldic crests adorned noble estates, palaces, and institutions.

At the top of the crest sits a majestic eagle, intricately carved and perched on a twisted bar. The eagle’s talons grip two gilded spheres, a powerful heraldic symbol often associated with imperial authority, protection, and dominion—motifs used since Roman times and prevalent in Holy Roman Empire and Napoleonic heraldry.

The central shield features a circular medallion with a bold gold stripe across its center—possibly signifying a family lineage or territorial mark. Surrounding the lower portion of the crest are elaborate acanthus leaves and scrollwork, deeply carved in the Rococo or late Baroque style, which was popular throughout the 1700s and celebrated for its ornamental fluidity and natural motifs.

This historical artifact has been thoughtfully mounted on a custom-fitted, sturdy metal display stand, making it ideal for display in both traditional and contemporary interiors. A true conversation piece, it adds character and a sense of European aristocratic history to any room.

Condition Report

This 18th-century carved giltwood and gesso coat of arms is in very good antique condition, with age-related wear consistent with age. The gilt finish shows areas of natural patina, minor rubbing, and small losses, particularly along high points and edges, which enhance its authentic aged character.
