A superb 19th-century wall bracket, masterfully carved in the Renaissance Revival style. This piece features a symmetrical pair of winged griffins, notable for their exceptionally expressive features and arched eyebrows, perched beneath a sturdy shelf. The background is finished with a meticulous incised diapered pattern, while the base culminates in a classical shell and scroll terminal.
Reflecting the Victorian obsession with historicism, this bracket draws directly from the 16th-century Italian grotesque tradition. Finished in a warm gold gilt with an authentic aged patina, it serves as both a protector of prized objects and a standalone piece of wall sculpture. Its 18 cm depth makes it exceptionally practical for displaying small bronzes, porcelain, or a prized carriage clock.
The gilt finish remains largely intact, exhibiting a warm, aged patina consistent with its 19th-century origin. Small restoration repairs have been done overtime.
