Antique Pair of 19th Century French Gothic Revival Brass Church Candlesticks

An exceptional pair of 19th-century French Gothic Revival brass church candlesticks, richly ornamented and evocative of ecclesiastical design from the High Gothic period. These tall candlesticks feature pierced crown-form sconces with heart and fleur-de-lis motifs, topped by central prickets originally intended to hold large altar candles. The twisted barley-sugar stems add a sense of movement and verticality, while the solid, tiered bases are supported by finely cast paw feet – a nod to medieval symbolism and the enduring strength of the Church.

Likely produced in France in the mid-to-late 1800s, these candlesticks reflect the revivalist fascination with Gothic architecture and liturgical grandeur, which surged across Europe in the 19th century. Pieces like these were typically used in churches or chapels, flanking altars or placed in devotional spaces to enhance spiritual ambiance through candlelight.

Today, they serve as both stunning decorative objects and rare liturgical antiques, ideal for collectors, interior designers, or anyone seeking to incorporate authentic Gothic Revival detail into their space.

Condition Report

This pair of 19th-century French Gothic Revival brass church candlesticks is presented in excellent antique condition.

Both candlesticks are structurally sound with no breaks, cracks, or repairs. The brass has developed a rich, even patina consistent with age.

Minor surface marks, oxidation spots, and slight wear to high points, commensurate with age and historical use.

The pierced crown-form sconces are intact and well-defined, with no losses to the decorative elements.

Original central prickets are present and firmly fixed.

Barley twist stems remain straight and secure. Paw feet are complete and well cast, offering solid balance and support.

The candlesticks retain a soft, aged shine. Could be further polished if desired, though current patina enhances authenticity and character.
