This striking pair of antique French Louis XVI style cassolettes, dating to the late 19th century, has been masterfully converted into elegant table lamps. Originally conceived as ornamental urns, these cassolettes are a fine example of neoclassical design, showcasing the timeless refinement and symmetry characteristic of the Louis XVI period (circa 1774–1792), which remained highly influential throughout the 19th century.
Crafted from solid white marble with delicate grey veining, these pieces are both substantial and sophisticated, resting on square plinth bases that enhance their architectural poise. The rich stone is complemented by finely cast gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts, which include:
Acanthus leaf handles curling gracefully from the shoulder of each urn
Detailed ribbon and bow appliqués on the front and back, a motif popularized during the neoclassical revival
Acanthus leaf decoration around the neck and base, emphasizing verticality and elegance
The original function of these cassolettes was decorative, often placed on mantels or consoles in grand interiors. Their later transformation into functional table lamps reflects both ingenuity and the enduring appeal of classical forms in modern living.
French in origin, this pair exemplifies the high standards of craftsmanship and design seen in decorative arts of the Belle Époque and Second Empire periods. The combination of cold, luminous marble with warm, gilded bronze offers an exquisite visual contrast, while the neutral tones ensure versatility in a wide range of interiors — from traditional to transitional or contemporary classic.
This elegant pair of antique French Louis XVI style cassolettes—converted into table lamps—is presented in very good antique condition, with only minor wear consistent with age.
Marble: The white marble bodies are smooth and intact, showing no cracks or structural damage. Subtle natural veining enhances their classic beauty.
Ormolu (Gilt Bronze) Mounts: The gilt bronze detailing remains crisp and richly patinated, with only gentle surface wear that adds character and authenticity. All major decorative elements, including the scrolling handles, laurel leaf motifs, and ribbon appliqués, are present.
Note on Condition: Each lamp features a decorative ribbon motif on the front and back. At the center of each ribbon is a small ball detail—one ball is missing from each lamp. These are not visually distracting, not noticeable from the reverse side, and do not affect the overall symmetry or aesthetic integrity of the lamps.
Electrical: Both lamps have been professionally converted and rewired for modern use with brass bulb holders. Functionally ready to install and use.
Overall, this pair remains a beautifully preserved and rare example of 19th-century French neoclassical design, offering both decorative appeal and practical use.
