A distinguished and highly decorative pair of late 19th-century French neoclassical table lamps, originally conceived as ornamental urns and subsequently converted for electricity with great sensitivity to their original design. Executed in richly variegated marble of rose, cream, and russet hues, each piece is adorned with finely cast and gilded bronze mounts of exceptional quality.
The classical urn forms are embellished with elegant acanthus leaf motifs, foliate swags, and scrolling handles, resting on stepped marble plinths and raised on ormolu toupie feet. The detailing is crisp, with the warm patina of the gilt bronze complementing the marble’s natural veining to superb effect.
Evocative of the neoclassical revival that flourished in France during the Belle Époque, these lamps epitomize the refined opulence of the period, drawing direct inspiration from Greco-Roman antiquity. They speak to an era when the decorative arts achieved a harmonious blend of classical restraint and luxurious finish.
This pair would make a striking focal point in a grand salon, library, or collector’s interior—objects of both utility and sculptural presence.
Both lamps are in very good antique condition, retaining their original giltwood finish with a beautifully aged patina.
