An elegant and stately Antique Porcelain Corinthian Table Lamp, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, beautifully blending classical architectural influences with fine British craftsmanship. Originally designed as an oil lamp, it has since been sympathetically converted to electricity, offering modern functionality without sacrificing its historic charm.
The lamp features a porcelain column with a rich marble effect glaze, designed to emulate the timeless appeal of real stone. Topped with a detailed brass Corinthian capital and set upon a classic stepped brass base, this piece pays homage to the architectural grandeur of ancient Greece and Rome, reinterpreted through Victorian and Edwardian design sensibilities.
The Corinthian order is one of the three principal classical orders of ancient Greek and Roman architecture, alongside the Doric and Ionic. Known for its ornate design, the Corinthian style is characterised by slender fluted columns topped with elaborate capitals decorated with acanthus leaves and scrolls. It became especially popular in the Roman period and was later revived during the Renaissance and again in the 19th century as part of the Neoclassical movement.
During the late Victorian and Edwardian periods in Britain, Corinthian-style lamp columns—particularly those mimicking marble—were widely admired for their association with elegance, grandeur, and classical refinement. This lamp is a fine example of that aesthetic, reimagined for domestic use.
Excellent antique condition, consistent with age and use.
No chips, cracks, or visible restoration. Marble-effect glaze is clean, even, and visually striking with minor age-appropriate wear.
Brass Corinthian capital is structurally sound and detailed, showing light patina in keeping with age. Stepped brass base is stable and well-preserved, with minor surface wear typical of antique pieces.
Professionally rewired to UK standards using high-quality British-made components. Fully PAT tested and certified for safety.
