Additional Information
Art Nouveau Brass Fireside Coal Scuttle, Late 19th Century

A decorative brass coal scuttle from the late 1800s, featuring a tapering form adorned with hammered heart-shaped (cordiform) and flowing foliate motifs, characteristic of the Art Nouveau style. It is fitted with twin side handles and a matching domed lid. The interior does not include a liner.

The Art Nouveau movement, which flourished from the 1890s to around 1910, emphasized organic forms, natural motifs, and elegant, flowing lines. Artists and designers drew inspiration from nature—especially plants and flowers—and integrated these forms into architecture, furniture, and household objects.

This coal scuttle exemplifies the period’s emphasis on beauty in everyday items. Coal scuttles, once a common fireside utility for storing coal, were often crafted from brass or copper and became increasingly decorative during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The absence of a liner in this piece suggests it may have been more ornamental than functional in its later use, aligning with the era’s focus on craftsmanship and aesthetic appeal.

Condition Report

This late 19th-century Art Nouveau brass coal scuttle is in good antique condition, showing age-appropriate wear. The brass surface exhibits a natural patina with some minor surface marks and light tarnishing consistent with age and use. The hammered decorative motifs remain well-defined and intact. The twin handles and hinged lid are secure and functional. Please note, the interior lacks a liner, and there are a few small dents and signs of previous use on the base and interior. Overall, a well-preserved and visually striking decorative piece.
