Art Nouveau Copper Firescreen with Bevelled Mirror Panel, c. 1900
An Exceptionally Fine Example of Arts & Crafts Influence

We are delighted to offer this truly exceptional and Art Nouveau Firescreen (Fireguard), distinguished by its construction in copper, dating to the turn of the 20th century, circa 1900.

The use of copper places this piece firmly within the influential Arts and Crafts Movement, which strongly overlapped with Art Nouveau, promoting handcrafted items in natural, honest materials. This piece is a beautiful statement for the hearth, combining utility with artistry.

Constructed entirely in copper, which has developed a rich, warm, and highly desirable verdigris/oxidised patina over the last century. Copper pieces from this period are less common than brass and are highly sought after by collectors of Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau metalware.

The frame showcases the quintessential organic, sinuous 'whiplash' lines and stylized floral motifs of the Art Nouveau period. The metalwork is beautifully wrought, reflecting an emphasis on visible hand-finishing and material quality.

The central feature is the original bevelled mirror glass. The bevelled edge expertly catches and reflects the warm tones of the copper and the firelight, visually enhancing the room. The contrast between the rich, dark copper and the reflective glass is particularly striking.

This piece embodies the ideals of the era: form following art. It acts as both a functional spark guard and a magnificent decorative object, unifying beauty and practicality.

The decision to use copper, rather than the more common brass, points towards a manufacturer or commissioner influenced by the Arts & Crafts Movement's reverence for material integrity. Copper metalwork from this period, often originating from studios or workshops rather than mass production lines, carries a strong collectable appeal. This screen would have graced the fireplace of a discerning individual who appreciated high-quality, artisan-made furnishings.

This rare copper firescreen provides an unparalleled, authentic focal point for any Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, or traditionally styled interior.

Condition Report

This exceptional copper firescreen is presented in very good antique condition, with the desirable signs of age and patina that enhance its authenticity and charm as a piece of early 20th-century design.

The copper frame is sound and structurally stable. It displays a rich, warm, and dark oxidised patina consistent with its age.

The central original bevelled mirror panel is in good overall antique condition, displaying the expected minor spotting or "foxing" to the silvering that confirms its age. Please note: There is a small, minor chip located on the edge of the bevelled glass in one corner (as visible in the photographs). This is typical of a century-old piece and does not significantly detract from its overall decorative impact.

The firescreen originally featured a lead backing panel, which has since been lost or removed. This has been professionally addressed by the insertion of a sympathetic replacement backing panel to ensure the mirror is securely held and protected within the frame. The replacement is functional and not visible when the screen is viewed from the front.
