British Arts & Crafts Pendant Light with Original Vaseline Globe
Early 20th Century

This impressive and rare large Arts & Crafts pendant light is of British origin, dating from the early 20th century, and represents an increasingly scarce survival of period lighting with its original vaseline glass globe intact.

The pendant is constructed in brass and copper, exhibiting the honest craftsmanship and mixed-metal aesthetic synonymous with the Arts & Crafts movement. The form is bold and architectural, yet softened by the warm tonal contrast of the metals and the distinctive glow of the vaseline glass.

The light retains its original vaseline globe, which is in excellent condition. The glass shows characteristic seed inclusions and small manufacturing bubbles, entirely consistent with early hand-made production and confirming originality. When illuminated, the globe emits a soft yellow-green light, creating a warm and atmospheric presence particularly associated with Arts & Crafts interiors.

The metal surfaces retain a deep, original patina, with no evidence of later polishing or over-restoration. Subtle variations in the metalwork and finish further support hand manufacture.

Given its scale, the pendant would originally have been intended for a hall, stairwell, or large reception space, serving as both a functional light source and an architectural focal point.

England

Circa 1905–1925

British Arts & Crafts lighting from the early 20th century placed emphasis on integrity of materials, visible construction, and the creation of atmosphere through light rather than ornament. Vaseline glass, containing trace amounts of uranium, was favoured for its warm colour and distinctive luminosity, particularly in ecclesiastical, institutional, and high-quality domestic interiors.

Large pendant lights of this nature were often commissioned for public buildings, schools, churches, and substantial private houses. Examples retaining their original glass and untouched metal surfaces are now notably rare.

Dealer’s Comment

A particularly fine and honest example, distinguished by its scale, original mixed-metal construction, and exceptional vaseline globe. The presence of manufacturing seeds within the glass confirms its period origin and adds to its character. Pieces of this quality and completeness are increasingly difficult to source and display exceptionally well in both period and contemporary interiors.
