Additional Information
Elegant Edwardian Brass Umbrella / Stick Stand c 1900

A highly refined and structurally sound stick or umbrella stand, dating from the Edwardian period, circa 1900–1910.

This piece is an excellent example of the Edwardian transition in taste, moving away from the heavy High Victorian style towards lighter, more classical forms. It blends the enduring utility of cast iron for stability with the bright, decorative appeal of polished brass, creating a sophisticated accent for any well-appointed entryway, hall, or library.

The Edwardian era (1901-1910, often extended to 1890-1920 in decorative arts) saw a renewed emphasis on classicism, elegance, and lightness in interior design.

The use of polished brass for the uprights was highly fashionable, as its reflective quality helped to brighten the typically dark hallways and entrance vestibules of the period.

The columnar structure and the use of simple, formal finials nod to Neo-Classical influences, offering a look of ordered simplicity and refinement. The solid cast iron base ensured the essential stability required for a piece designed to hold multiple, heavy, and potentially wet umbrellas or walking sticks.

The piece is defined by four strong, cylindrical polished brass uprights, elegantly finished with distinct, tiered finials at the top. These columns support the upper stick rack, providing a verticality that enhances the stand's formal presentation.

The top section is a sturdy, square brass grid with multiple divisions, designed to neatly separate and support several canes, walking sticks, or umbrellas.

The stand is grounded by a heavy, deep-set, square-form cast iron base. This substantial construction ensures stability. The base is subtly raised on four square, bracket-style feet.

Condition Report

Good Antique Condition. The stand is structurally sound, stable, and entirely functional for its intended purpose. It displays an attractive, authentic patina commensurate with its age (circa 120 years).
