A striking and rare example of early 20th century lighting, this large ceiling pendant is crafted from exquisite slag glass, composed of three distinct layers – a lustrous opaline, richly veined slag marble glass, and a clear glass outer surface which lends depth and vibrancy when illuminated.
The pendant is beautifully formed, its bold geometric body worked with pronounced ribbed facets that capture and reflect the light, enhancing the natural swirling patterns within the glass. The glass itself displays the characteristic warm tones and subtle translucence for which high-quality slag glass is so admired, producing a soft yet atmospheric glow when lit.
Retaining its original brass gallery and suspension chain, this piece remains untouched and authentic, a testament to the quality of workmanship from the interwar period. The gallery has developed a pleasing, mellow patina consistent with age, adding further charm and character.
Dating to circa 1920–1930, this pendant is a wonderful example of period lighting in the transitional style between Art Nouveau’s organic forms and the more architectural geometry of Art Deco. Substantial in scale, it would make a superb statement in an entrance hall, stairwell, or over a dining table.
Excellent original condition with only minor wear consistent with age. The glass is free from cracks or losses, with natural striations and bubbles from the hand-made process. Rewired and ready for use.
