Exceptional Silver-Plated Five-Light Table Candelabrum with Elephant and Lizard Motifs, Circa 1880

A highly impressive and richly sculptural late 19th-century silver-plated table candelabrum, notable for its exceptional level of modelling and exotic decorative detail. The piece rises from a dramatic tripod base formed with boldly cast claw feet, each emerging from a textured ground of scrolling leaves and foliage, amongst which a finely modelled lizard is subtly incorporated, adding both movement and character to the design.

The fluted central column supports an ornate circular platform populated by four finely cast elephants, each positioned beneath the candle arms. Their trunks are raised towards the candleholders, and it is clear that these would originally have been linked by delicate chains, running from trunk to sconce — a charming and sophisticated detail occasionally found on high-quality Victorian table pieces of this type. The chains are now absent, though their former presence is evident and does not detract from the overall impact of the candelabrum.

Above, the arms extend gracefully to support four outer candle sconces, centred by a fifth light and crowned with an elegant flame finial snuffer, completing the architectural composition. The combination of classical structure with exotic animal ornament reflects the Victorian fascination with the natural world and the influence of Orientalist and historicist design during the period.

Though unmarked, the weight, quality of casting and complexity of the decorative elements strongly suggest a well-executed European work of the late Victorian era.

During the latter half of the 19th century, table candelabra evolved into highly decorative centrepieces, often incorporating symbolic or exotic animal motifs. Elephants were widely admired for their association with strength, wisdom and empire, while reptiles and naturalistic foliage reflected the Victorian obsession with nature and exploration. Silver-plated examples allowed makers to produce bold, sculptural forms without the constraints of solid silver, resulting in imaginative designs such as this.

Dealers’ Comments

“A truly outstanding and theatrical candelabrum. The quality of the casting, particularly in the elephants, foliage and lizard, is exceptional. Pieces of this ambition were intended as centre-table statements, and this example has all the drama and charm one could hope for.”

Condition Report

The candelabrum is in very good condition, retaining a pleasing, even silver-plated surface consistent with age and use. The structure is solid and well-balanced. The claw feet, leafwork and lizard detailing remain crisp and well-defined.

As noted, the fine decorative chains linking the elephants’ trunks to the candleholders are no longer present, a common occurrence with pieces of this type. There are no breaks, repairs or structural issues observed. Overall, the candelabrum presents exceptionally well and retains strong decorative presence.
