A truly fine and richly cast late 19th-century bronze stick stand, distinguished by its profusion of exquisite detail and commanding sculptural presence, wholly typical of the finest French decorative bronzework of the period.
The piece exhibits a magnificent level of detail across its structure, founded on a heavy circular drip tray cast in high relief. This base features scrolling acanthus and vine-work surrounding an arresting central motif: a classical Lion Masque. This powerful zoomorphic face provides a bold, focal point to the base, framed by trailing foliage executed with exceptional depth and precision. The rim of the tray is further embellished with flanking Lion Masques at the four anchor points, resting firmly on scrolled feet.
The central fluted column, itself enriched with engraved foliage, rises to the upper division. Midway, a bold circular support provides divisions for canes, umbrellas, or fire tools. The twin brackets of this support are cast with remarkable vigour, each featuring a boldly sculpted Lion Head at its centre, their manes flowing into the decorative scrollwork.
The bronze retains a superb, naturally aged patina with warm, dark toning and subtle highlights to the high-relief elements—a testament to both its age and the master quality of the casting. The whole stands solid and true, conveying an air of restrained grandeur and refined utility.
Recently cleaned and presented in very good condition. The bronze retains a rich, even patination with minor wear consistent with age. The underside has been professionally treated and rust-protected to ensure stability and preservation. All elements are original, secure, and structurally sound, with no losses or repairs.
