A superb and finely crafted antique firescreen or fireguard, executed in wrought iron and dating to the early 20th Century, circa 1900–1920.
This elegant screen is notable for its exquisite scrollwork and its functional, smaller scale. It presents as either a bespoke commission for a smaller fireplace (such as a cottage or bedroom hearth) or a particularly fine example of a foundry’s display model or apprentice work, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship in metal.
Following the industrial Victorian era, the early 20th century saw a resurgence of interest in traditional craftsmanship, often drawing inspiration from earlier periods. This screen’s design is a striking example of Gothic Revival or French Renaissance influence, characterised by the rhythmic repetition of the Fleur-de-Lis motif and graceful S-scrolls.
Screens of this quality were essential for protecting carpets and clothes from sparks while simultaneously serving as a decorative feature that framed the fireplace, even when the fire was not lit. The level of detail and quality of the finished ironwork suggest a skilled hand, whether that of a master smith or a high-quality specialist foundry.
