This striking wall mirror features a deep, cushion-profile frame of impressive architectural presence. The primary molding is richly decorated with continuous scrolling acanthus foliage and floral motifs in relief. At each corner of the inner aperture, the frame is anchored by beautifully rendered anthemion (honeysuckle) flourishes, a hallmark of 19th-century Neoclassical design.
The circular mirror plate is set within an elegant square frame, creating a sophisticated geometric contrast that draws the eye. The entire surface retains its original gilding, which has aged to a deep, warm gold with significant "character" cracking to the composition, confirming its nearly two-century-old history.
During the 1830s, English mirror makers favored the "cushion" frame for its ability to catch and reflect candlelight across complex gilded surfaces. The use of anthemion corners points toward the influence of designers like Thomas Hope, who championed the Greek Revival style in British interiors. While the specific workshop is unknown, the complexity of the molded composition suggests a high-end London atelier specialising in ornamental gilding.
"There is a formidable 'honesty' to this mirror. In an age where so many frames are over-restored, this piece retains its original gilded skin, complete with the fine craquelure that collectors of authentic 19th-century treen and furniture covet. The circular-to-square transition is particularly successful, offering a softer, more reflective focal point than a standard rectangular glass. It is a piece that commands a wall, perfectly balancing the gravitas of the 1830s with a silhouette that works brilliantly in both period and contemporary interiors."
The frame is structurally sound. There is widespread, stable craquelure (fine cracking) to the composition molding, which is entirely consistent with age and environmental changes over 180+ years.
The gilding is original and presents with a lovely 'shabby-chic' grandeur. There are minor losses to the gilding and composition at the extreme edges and corners, revealing the historical gesso beneath, which adds to its antique charm.
The mirror plate is a modern replacement and is consequently flawless, providing a clear reflection without the foxing often found in antique glass. The reverse has been expertly fitted with a new backing and secure hanging hardware.
