A magnificent and imposing late 19th-century British Renaissance Revival wall bracket. This large-scale shelf is masterfully finished in gesso and giltwood, featuring two powerful griffins in high relief, flanking a central classical arrangement. The griffin—a mythical guardian symbolizing vigilance and strength—was a hallmark of the Victorian Neo-Renaissance, used to convey status and permanence in grand library or entryway schemes.
The bracket is carved from solid wood and retains a beautiful, authentic patina where the gold leaf has gently worn away to reveal the warm gesso beneath. Unlike smaller, more common cherub brackets, this piece offers a masculine, architectural presence. Its deep 22 cm shelf makes it highly functional for displaying significant antiquities or heavy decorative objects.
Very good condition, as indicated by the accompanying images.
Some wear to the gold gilt through to the gesso
