An exceptional and highly decorative set of four early 20th-century pendant lights, featuring heavy-gauge copper bowls with a remarkable, naturally aged verdigris patina. Originally conceived as industrial or domestic vessels, these discs have been masterfully repurposed into a cohesive lighting installation.
Each pendant retains its original hand-wrought character, featuring a series of perimeter ventilation apertures that allow subtle points of light to escape laterally. The underside reveals the deep, recessed warmth of the copper, housing a single bulb that provides a focused yet atmospheric downward glow. The set is suspended from aged brass link chains with period-correct twisted silk-flex cabling.
These vessels date to the Edwardian era (circa 1900–1910). During this period, heavy copper was the standard for high-quality domestic and industrial heat-exchange components. The distinctive "donut" or toroid shape suggests they may have functioned as part of a specialised steam-heating system or as "hot water discs" used in grand country house linens or carriages.
The verdigris finish, a carbonate of copper, is entirely authentic, formed by decades of exposure to moisture and air. Unlike modern chemical patinas, this "crust" shows a complex variegated palette of sea-foam green, malachite, and raw chocolate copper tones, signaling true antiquity.
"It is increasingly rare to find a matched set of four in such uniform condition. What makes these pieces so compelling is the 'UFO-esque' profile; they bridge the gap between Victorian industrial utility and Mid-Century sculptural modernism. In a contemporary interior, they offer a grit and texture that newly manufactured 'industrial' lighting simply cannot replicate. They are, effectively, functional sculptures for the ceiling."
Excellent antique condition. The verdigris is stabilised. Re-wired for the UK market with antique-style gold braided flex and E27 lamp holders.
