A highly decorative and increasingly scarce Victorian cast iron stick stand, produced by the renowned Coalbrookdale Company and retaining a clear foundry stamp, confirming its origin.
This fine example embodies Coalbrookdale’s mastery of decorative ironwork, combining architectural presence with practical design, a hallmark of the firm’s output during the mid- to late-19th century.
The stick stand is entirely of cast iron, finished in its original black surface with an attractive, untouched patina developed over time. The design is centred around a tall, arched back, enriched with finely cast scrolling foliate detail and classical ornament.
Baluster-turned vertical supports flank the central arch, lending both structure and elegance. The lower section is particularly strong in design, incorporating elaborately scrolled brackets and a substantial plinth base. The integral drip tray is deeply recessed, purpose-made to collect water and mud from walking sticks and umbrellas — an essential feature in Victorian halls.
The underside bears the Coalbrookdale stamp, a desirable and reassuring detail, confirming both quality and authenticity.
Originally intended for use in the entrance halls of town and country houses, the stand was designed to store:
Today, it remains entirely functional and equally suited as a decorative hall piece, providing architectural interest in both period and contemporary interiors.
The Coalbrookdale Company, based in Shropshire, was one of Britain’s most important industrial and decorative iron foundries. By the Victorian period, Coalbrookdale had established an international reputation for producing cast iron of exceptional quality, supplying both public commissions and refined domestic wares.
Coalbrookdale’s designs were widely exhibited and celebrated for their combination of strength, refinement and artistic ambition. Stamped domestic pieces such as this stick stand represent the very best of their production and are now keenly sought after by collectors.
From a private English collection.
Previously situated within a country house setting.
“A particularly well-designed and crisply cast Coalbrookdale stick stand, retaining its original surface and clear foundry stamp. The proportions and architectural quality of this example set it apart. Stamped pieces of this calibre are now increasingly difficult to source and always in demand.”
In excellent antique condition throughout.
Minor surface wear and casting marks consistent with age and original manufacture. No structural issues, losses or repairs. The piece remains strong, stable and ready for use.
