An exceptionally fine and architecturally imposing Victorian cast iron stick stand from the world-renowned Coalbrookdale Company. This stamped example represents the pinnacle of British industrial artistry, hailing from the Shropshire foundry that pioneered the use of cast iron for decorative domestic furniture.
The stand is characterized by:
The "Great Exhibition" Quality: Coalbrookdale was the premier foundry of the 19th century. This piece features their signature crispness of casting, seen in the intricate scrolling foliate back and the baluster-turned supports.
Architectural Arched Design: The tall, arched back provides a sense of Gothic Revival and Classical hybridity, a hallmark of the mid-Victorian era.
Authenticity: Retaining a clear Coalbrookdale foundry stamp and diamond registration mark on the reverse. Stamped domestic pieces are significantly more desirable to collectors than the many contemporary imitations.
Original Surface: Finished in a traditional black with a deep, untouched patina. Unlike many cast iron pieces that have been "stripped and dipped," this example retains its historical integrity and "country house" character.
Weight & Stability: At 30 kg (66 lbs), the stand possesses the substantial heft required to hold heavy walking sticks and wet umbrellas without risk of tipping, featuring a deeply recessed integral drip tray.
“A particularly well-designed and crisply cast Coalbrookdale stick stand, retaining its original surface and clear foundry stamp. The proportions and architectural quality of this example set it apart. Stamped pieces of this calibre are now increasingly difficult to source and always in demand.”
In excellent antique condition throughout.
Minor surface wear and casting marks consistent with age and original manufacture. No structural issues, losses or repairs. The piece remains strong, stable and ready for use.
