Backstool

A Backstool is an alternative spelling of Back Stool, commonly used in antique furniture catalogues and historical references. The term describes an early chair with a simple upright back and no arms, widely produced during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Backstools were commonly made from oak, walnut or fruitwood and were used in dining rooms, halls and country houses. Many examples feature carved back rails, turned legs or upholstered seats, reflecting the craftsmanship of their period.
