Standing an impressive 102 cm high and weighing approximately 77 kg, the piece is constructed in three separate sections: an elaborate planter, a turned central support and a substantial square architectural pedestal.
The upper planter is particularly striking, centred by a beautifully modelled classical face, surrounded by scrolling foliage, swags and bold moulded ornament. Large scrolling details to either side give the planter an imposing architectural character.
Beneath, a turned support incorporates a continuous geometric border before meeting the substantial square pedestal. The pedestal itself is decorated in relief on each face and finished with a projecting moulded top and stepped base.
The surface is especially attractive. Years of natural weathering have softened the terracotta and created wonderful tonal variation, while traces of the original old green paint remain visible across the surface. These surviving remnants give the piece considerable character and should, in our opinion, be preserved.
Made in London during the 19th century, this is a wonderfully decorative example of Victorian architectural terracotta and has the scale to form a focal point within a garden, terrace, orangery or conservatory.

Terracotta with traces of original painted decoration
A wonderfully imposing piece of 19th-century London garden ornament.
What particularly attracted us to this planter is its combination of scale, architectural detailing and surface. The weathered terracotta has developed tremendous character, while traces of the historic green paint survive and give a glimpse of how dramatically the piece would originally have appeared.
At over a metre tall, it has genuine presence and is decorative enough to stand as a sculptural object even without planting.
We would preserve the surface exactly as it is. Its weathering and surviving painted decoration are an important part of its history and appeal.
In good antique condition with wear and weathering commensurate with its 19th-century age and historic outdoor use.
There is extensive natural surface weathering, patination, discolouration and loss to the historic painted finish, with attractive traces of old green paint remaining.
Expected age-related surface imperfections, small chips, knocks and losses are present. These are consistent with a substantial architectural terracotta piece of this age and contribute to its character.
The planter is constructed in three separate sections, allowing it to be dismantled for positioning and transportation.

As heritage craftsmen and antique specialists, we believe in preserving the authenticity and integrity of each piece. Original finishes, patina, wear, and signs of age are retained wherever possible, as these elements contribute to both character and historical significance.
When restoration, rewiring, repairs, or conservation work is required, it is undertaken sympathetically using traditional techniques and materials appropriate to the period of the piece. Our philosophy is one of careful stewardship rather than unnecessary restoration, ensuring antiques remain both functional and historically respectful.
The result is a collection of pieces that have been thoughtfully prepared, allowing future owners to enjoy them with confidence while preserving their unique story and character.
