An enchanting and rare pair of 19th-century French giltwood wall brackets (appliques). Each shelf features a masterfully carved putto in a symmetrical pose, supporting a grand, fluted clamshell above their head. The motifs are a nod to the mid-18th century Rococo style, which celebrated organic forms and maritime mythology.
The shelves retain their original giltwood finish, showing a charming, honest wear that reveals the warmth of the gesso beneath. Unusually, the top surfaces are still lined with their original crimson velvet, adding a rich, tactile contrast to the gold. These are exceptionally rare as a surviving matched pair and provide a sophisticated, sculptural way to display small bronzes or porcelain.
These shelves are in very good antique condition, showcasing their high quality.
The giltwood finish is well-preserved, with natural wear that adds to the character and charm of the pieces.
The intricate detailing of the cherubs and clamshells remains intact.
The original red velvet, despite showing signs of age, continues to contribute to the overall elegance and historical significance of the shelves.
