A Rare Pair of Gorham & Henry Webster Silver-Plated Candle Lamps, c. 1875

An extraordinary and historically significant pair of Victorian silver-plated candle lamps, representing a rare collaboration between the Gorham Manufacturing Co. of Rhode Island and the London-based silversmith Henry Webster (HW & Co.). Crafted circa 1875, these lamps are a masterclass in Neoclassical design and 19th-century mechanical innovation.

The pair features:

  • The Gorham Shades: Exquisitely pierced silver-plated shades stamped "Gorham." The intricate fretwork was designed to cast a soft, patterned glow, a hallmark of high-end Victorian dining etiquette.

  • The Webster Holders: Neoclassical bases stamped "HW & Co.," featuring detachable nozzles and elegant, fluted forms that reflect the refined British influence Henry Webster brought to the partnership.

  • Innovative Mechanism: These lamps retain their original spring-loaded internal mechanisms, designed to push the candle upward as it burns, ensuring a constant flame height.

  • Historical Integrity: Remarkably, the set includes original 19th-century candles—partially used but preserved—providing a rare, direct link to the domestic technology of the 1870s.

  • Scale & Presence: Standing at an impressive 52 cm, these lamps possess a stately architectural silhouette that commanded the center of grand Victorian dining tables.

Condition Report

The pierced silver-plated shades are stamped "Gorham." They are in good antique condition with minor losses, consistent with age and use. These imperfections do not detract from their overall appeal and historic value.

The neoclassical silver-plated candle holders feature detachable nozzles stamped "HW & Co." They are also in good antique condition, showing minor wear.

The spring-loaded candle mechanisms are intact and functional. One original candle remains in place, partially used—an excellent surviving feature that offers a glimpse into their historical use.
