Additional Information
French 'Petitot' Gilt Brass Six-Sided Hall Lantern, d. 1927

A refined French ceiling pendant hall lantern, clearly stamped with the maker’s mark PETITOT, and displaying the quality and restraint associated with fine Parisian lighting of the period.

The lantern is of elegant six-sided (hexagonal) form, each side fitted with bevelled glass panels which catch and soften the light. The structure is crafted in gilt brass, retaining a pleasing, mellow patina consistent with age. It is suspended from a matching chain and ceiling rose, giving the piece excellent proportion and balance.

The design is understated yet architectural, with crisp corner uprights, neatly chamfered glazing, and subtle moulded detailing to both the canopy and base. Lanterns of this type were traditionally used in entrance halls and stairwells, where durability and visual refinement were essential.

This lantern would be equally suited to a hallway, porch, stairwell, or cloakroom, and sits comfortably in both period properties and more contemporary interiors seeking authentic antique lighting.

During the late 19th century early 20th century, French lighting workshops produced lanterns of increasing sophistication, combining high-quality brasswork with well-finished glass. Petitot was among the makers supplying elegant yet practical lighting for townhouses and urban residences, particularly in Paris.

Surviving examples bearing a clear maker’s stamp, along with their original form and bevelled glass, are now increasingly scarce.

Dealer’s Comments

“This is a well-proportioned and elegant French hall lantern. The quality of the brasswork and the bevelled glass are immediately apparent, and the presence of the Petitot stamp adds genuine authenticity and desirability. A timeless and versatile piece.”
