Magnificent Pair of Gilt Bronze Lion Table Lamps by Henri Picard

This exceptional pair of table lamps represents a masterclass in 19th-century French bronze casting. The lions are the work of the renowned Parisian fondeur Henri Picard, whose prestigious commissions included supplying the apartments of Emperor Napoleon III at the Louvre.

Originally conceived as the flanking components of a monumental Gilt Bronze Surtout de Table (Centerpiece), these lions have been thoughtfully and expertly converted into a pair of sophisticated table lamps. This conversion breathes new life into the figures, allowing their sculptural grandeur to be appreciated at eye level within a modern interior setting.

Each lion is cast in heavy bronze with an exquisite mercury-gilt finish. The quality of the chasing—specifically the tactile rendering of the manes and the powerful anatomical detail of the paws—is characteristic of Picard’s finest work. The lions are mounted upon substantial honed dark marble bases, raised on elegant gilt bun feet. The transition to lighting is seamless, featuring a polished, slender stem that complements rather than distracts from the bronze artistry.

"It is rare to find Picard bronzes of this scale and quality outside of a museum or a complete imperial service. While they began life as part of a larger, grand table centerpiece, their conversion into lamps is a triumph of 'le goût Français.' It transforms them from a static dining ornament into functional pieces of art that can anchor a library desk or a pair of bedside tables. The inward-facing, mirrored composition makes them a true pair—a rarity in itself."

These lions were originally part of a larger decorative ensemble produced in mid-19th century Paris. Following the tradition of high-end ébénisterie and bronzerie, they were likely separated from their original mirrored plateau in the 20th century and professionally converted. They were recently sourced from a notable private collection.
