Pair of Gilt Bronze Lion Table Lamps by Henri Picard, Paris c.1850–1870

An exceptional and highly imposing pair of 19th-century French gilt bronze lion table lamps by the celebrated Parisian bronzier Henri Picard. Renowned for his fine Empire and Second Empire bronze work, Picard supplied decorative bronzes to elite commissions, including furnishings for the apartments of Napoleon III at the Louvre.

Originally created as part of a grand gilt bronze table centrepiece (surtout de table), these sculptural lions have been expertly adapted into a pair of statement table lamps. The conversion has been carried out with sensitivity, preserving the integrity of the original bronze sculpture while allowing the forms to function as dramatic interior lighting.

Each lion is cast in heavy bronze and finished with a rich mercury-gilt surface. The modelling is exceptionally fine, with beautifully chased manes, powerful anatomical definition and carefully articulated paws. The quality of detailing reflects the high standards of Parisian bronze casting during the mid-19th century.

The figures are mounted on substantial polished dark marble bases, raised on finely cast gilt bun feet. A slender, elegant stem rises from each base to support the lighting element, designed to complement rather than distract from the sculptural bronze work.

The mirrored, inward-facing composition creates a strong sense of balance and symmetry, enhancing their presence as a true matched pair and giving them significant decorative impact in interior settings.

Produced in Paris during the mid-19th century (circa 1850–1870), these lions are attributed to Henri Picard, one of the leading bronziers of the Second Empire period.

Picard was known for his refined neoclassical and Empire-style bronzes, supplying luxury decorative objects to aristocratic and imperial clientele. Works of this quality were often produced as part of larger table centrepieces or salon furnishings, designed to reflect prestige, symmetry and classical grandeur.

In the 20th century, many such decorative ensembles were separated, with individual components repurposed. In this case, the lions have been professionally converted into lamps, allowing them to be appreciated as sculptural lighting objects within a contemporary interior context.

Today, surviving matched pairs of Picard bronzes of this scale and quality are increasingly rare and highly sought after by collectors and interior designers.
