Additional Information
A Transatlantic Collection: Gorham Candle Lamps & Martin Hall & Co. Corinthian Candlesticks
United States and United Kingdom, circa 1875–1890

This exceptional collection features two pairs of historically significant silver-plated candle holders, representing the pinnacle of American and British craftsmanship between 1875 and 1890.

The Gorham Candle Lamps (c. 1875)

Crafted in Rhode Island, these lamps are the result of Gorham’s collaboration with London silversmith Henry Webster.

  • Mechanical Ingenuity: They feature their original, fully functional spring-loaded mechanisms, designed to keep the flame at a constant height as the candle burns.

  • Originality: Incredibly, they retain partially used original 19th-century candles, offering a rare museum-quality link to Victorian domestic life.

  • The Shades: Each lamp features an intricately pierced silver-plated shade, stamped "Gorham," designed to cast decorative light patterns across a dining setting.

The Martin Hall & Co. Candlesticks (c. 1890)

Crafted in Sheffield, England, these imposing 55 cm Corinthian columns represent the height of British Neoclassical revival.

  • Architectural Grandeur: The fluted columns are topped with crisp Corinthian capitals and sit upon stepped bases adorned with finely modeled rams' heads—classical symbols of strength and nobility.

  • The Maker: Martin Hall & Co. was a powerhouse of British silver, known for their proprietary "Martinoid" alloy and their presence at major World Exhibitions from 1851 to 1915.
