Additional Information
Mid-Century Spanish Sunburst Ceiling Light in Gilt Iron, c.1950s

A striking mid-century Spanish sunburst ceiling light, crafted in gilt iron and designed in the dramatic Hollywood Regency style. This sculptural flush-mount fixture features a bold, radiating arrangement of stylised leaf forms, arranged in a layered crown-like design that creates a strong architectural presence on the ceiling.

At its centre is a decorative rope-twist ring, from which tiered iron leaves extend outwards in a dynamic sunburst formation. When illuminated, the design produces a warm, atmospheric glow, with light filtering through the sculptural foliage to create depth, shadow and visual texture.

Handcrafted in Spain during the mid-20th century (circa 1950–1960), this piece reflects the high-quality ironwork for which Spanish makers became internationally recognised during the post-war period. Spanish artisans combined traditional metalworking techniques with the glamorous, nature-inspired aesthetics of Hollywood Regency design, resulting in lighting that is both decorative and architectural.

The fixture retains its original gilt finish, now beautifully aged with natural patination, soft oxidation and subtle tonal variation within the recessed detailing. This aged surface enhances the depth and authenticity of the piece, highlighting the craftsmanship of the hand-formed ironwork.

Its shallow flush-mount design makes it highly versatile, particularly suitable for rooms where ceiling height is limited. It works beautifully in hallways, bedrooms, dressing rooms, stair landings or entrance spaces, where it can act as a sculptural focal point.

Date

Circa 1950–1960

During the mid-20th century, Spain emerged as an important centre for decorative iron lighting, producing high-quality fixtures for both domestic and export markets. Spanish workshops became especially known for their expressive sunburst and floral-inspired ceiling lights, which aligned perfectly with the global popularity of Hollywood Regency interiors.

These designs combined traditional Iberian ironworking techniques with theatrical, nature-inspired forms, resulting in lighting that remains highly sought after by interior designers today. Original Spanish gilt iron ceiling lights are now particularly valued for their sculptural quality and ability to add warmth, texture and character to both contemporary and period interiors.
