An exceptional and highly elegant pair of late 19th-century French Sèvres-style cobalt blue porcelain vases, featuring exquisite, finely chased gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts, dating to circa 1880. These classical baluster-form urns are enveloped in a deep, lustrous bleu de roi (king's blue) glaze, offering a rich, reflective depth that beautifully contrasts with the warm, honeyed tones of the antique gilding.
Each vase is symmetrically adorned with highly detailed ormolu friezes depicting classical allegorical scenes of figures and playful putti interacting around an altar, framed by sweeping floral and leaf swags. The rims are crowned with a delicate, pierced ribbon-and-bow classical border, and each piece stands proud on a heavy, turned brass or bronze socle base with an incised hatched border.
Dating from the historic revival periods of late 19th-century France, pairs of cobalt and ormolu vases were produced to satisfy the immense demand for grand objet de vertu that recalled the luxury of Louis XV and XVI interiors. The classical allegorical mounts are directly inspired by the mythological themes popularised by the Royal Sèvres manufactory and the master bronziers of the 18th century.
Pieces of this specific scale and refined silhouette were traditionally designed to flank a grand chimney piece clock as part of a mantelpiece garniture de cheminée, or to provide symmetry on an executive writing bureau or console table in a formal drawing room.
Today, this pair represents a highly decorative collectors' item of the finest calibre. Their classical symmetry and striking color palette lend them an immediate sophistication that transitions seamlessly from traditional country homes to eclectic contemporary spaces. Standing beautifully in proportion to a standard wine bottle (as shown in reference photography), they possess excellent presence without overwhelming a surface. They can be displayed purely as sculptural antiquities, or cleverly integrated into a modern lighting scheme by a specialist restorer to create a truly bespoke pair of luxury table lamps.
Presented in excellent antique condition
Both porcelain bodies are structurally stable, sound, and entirely free from hairline cracks or visible damage. The deep cobalt glaze retains its rich, original glass-like sheen, marred only by a single, minor chip that remains entirely hidden from view unless the gilt bronze mount is intentionally removed.
The ormolu elements are remarkably complete. The gilding displays an honest, historic patination with gentle oxidation and rubbing to the high points, which beautifully accentuates the three-dimensional quality of the classical figures.
Both internal frames have benefited from professional historic repairs. These structural reinforcements are completely invisible externally and can only be detected upon looking inside the urns, ensuring the pieces remain entirely robust for display without compromising their aesthetic integrity.
