A Rare Pair of Hand-Carved Wooden Griffin Architectural Figures on Gallery Stands
Continental Europe, circa 1780–1850

These masterfully executed carvings are quintessential examples of the "Grand Manner" of European interior architecture. Likely originating as terminal figures for a grand oak staircase or as the supporting trusses for a monumental mantelpiece, they embody the power and precision of 18th to 19th-century master carvers.

Each griffin—a legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head of an eagle—is rendered with a startlingly expressive, open-mouthed snarl. The anatomical detail is exceptional, featuring deep-set piercing eyes, finely textured manes, and a meticulously carved set of fangs.

The figures emerge from lush, scrolling acanthus leaf bases. This transition from organic foliage to mythical beast is a hallmark of the Baroque and Neoclassical traditions, representing the triumph of civilization over the wild.

To honor their status as fine-art fragments, the pair has been mounted on minimalist, satin-black metal gallery stands. This presentation highlights their silhouette and allows for 360-degree appreciation of the hand-carved grain and texture.

Condition Report

This pair of antique hand-carved wooden griffins is in overall very good condition, consistent with age and historical use. The carvings retain excellent detail throughout, including the facial features, flowing manes, and acanthus leaf bases. Surface wear, minor nicks, and patina are present, adding to their authentic antique character. Notable flaw: one ear has been chipped off, as shown in photos, but this does not detract from the overall visual impact or structural integrity. Both pieces are securely mounted on custom black metal stands for safe and elegant display.
