Additional Information
A Set of Three 19th Century French Natural History Lithographs: 'Le Gibbon' and Primates
By K. Adam (Delineator) and Beaupré (Lithographer) Published by Th. Lejeune, Editeur, à Bruxelles, circa 1840-1860

A charming and historically significant triptych of framed 19th-century natural history lithographs, showcasing the curiosity of the Victorian era. The set features delicate hand-coloring and focuses on primate studies.

The lithographs include:

  1. A standing, almost bipedal primate, holding what appears to be a walking staff, emphasizing anthropomorphic qualities.

  2. The central image (Image 2), titled "Le Gibbon," specifically attributes the work "V. Adam del." (designed by the celebrated French illustrator Victor Adam) and "Beaupré Sc." (engraved by Beaupré). This print depicts the Gibbon against a stylized jungle backdrop of ferns.

  3. A third corresponding primate study.

The set is presented in uniform, dark, square frames with a distressed edge and internal gold-finished slips. This framing style perfectly bridges the gap between scientific curiosity and antique decorative art, presenting these academic studies as sophisticated interior design elements.

Based on the title "Le Gibbon" and the publisher's mark visible (though faint) on one, "Lith. de Th. Lejeune Éditeur, à Bruxelles," these plates likely originate from a French or Belgian encyclopedia from the mid-19th century (circa 1830-1860).

Key Artists/Publishers:

  • V. Adam del: (Victor Adam, 1801-1866) A renowned French illustrator, lithographer, and painter.

  • Th. Lejeune: A known publisher in Brussels active in the 19th century.
