A highly elegant and exceptionally detailed French cast iron stick stand, dating from the late 19th Century, circa 1880. This commanding piece is a superb example of the decorative utility items that graced the entrance halls and drawing rooms of significant properties during the Napoleon III and Belle Époque periods.
Crafted from solid, heavy cast iron, the stand features a tall, commanding profile defined by a central columnar shaft that exhibits a refined Neo-Classical influence. Its design confidently places it within the popular Revival styles of the late 19th century.
This particular example is notable for its appealing original or professionally restored green enamel finish. This striking colour highlights the intricate casting work beautifully and provides a charming contrast to the typical black, offering a fresh, vibrant aesthetic. The finish has developed a rich, age-appropriate patina consistent with over a century of use, adding significant depth and genuine period character, enhancing its authenticity and visual appeal.
The stand is proudly topped with an intricate scrollwork heart-shaped ring, a distinctive detail that lends a noble and unmistakably French pedigree.
The central support is delicately ribbed and punctuated by an ornate knop featuring scrolling foliage and prominent anthemion-style elements in high relief, demonstrating meticulous foundry work.
The substantial oval base is both functional and highly decorative. It serves as a spacious removable drip tray to catch water runoff from umbrellas or implements. The base is beautifully cast with symmetrical scrollwork, shell-like fluting, and a central foliate cartouche, demonstrating the superior quality and attention to detail inherent in the French foundry worker's art.
In good antique condition and structurally sound. The piece shows only a minor, superficial loss consistent with age, which does not detract from its visual appeal or utility.
