THE PEOPLE BEHIND SHACKLETON FOX

Jackie & Jonathan Shackleton-Fox

Shackleton Fox is an independent, family-run antiques business founded in 2018 by husband-and-wife Jackie and Jonathan Shackleton-Fox. What began with a shared love of antiques and the restoration of our own historic home has grown into a business dedicated to discovering, restoring and preserving remarkable pieces.

Based in rural Lincolnshire, we specialise in antique lighting, decorative antiques and distinctive objects for the home. Every piece is personally sourced and carefully selected, with restoration and conservation undertaken where appropriate in our own workshop.
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

A Lifelong Interest in Antiques

Jackie’s passion for antiques began in childhood, inspired by her father, a building surveyor who fulfilled a lifelong ambition by opening an antiques shop in Yorkshire.

Weekends were often spent searching for antiques for the family home or the shop, visiting dealers and discovering unusual objects. She also remembers cycling to the local museum, spending hours exploring its collections and sitting quietly sketching the taxidermy displays.

Another important influence was her uncle John, a respected antiques dealer and restorer, whose knowledge and craftsmanship helped nurture her appreciation for the care and skill involved in preserving historic objects.

These early experiences fostered a lifelong fascination with antiques, traditional craftsmanship and the stories objects carry — an interest that continues to shape Shackleton Fox today.

Experience with Historic Buildings

Jackie spent a number of years working for the National Trust, an experience that gave her an extraordinary insight into some of Britain's most remarkable historic houses, their collections and the people dedicated to preserving them.

Her work took her far beyond the rooms open to visitors, from hidden attics and cellars to rooftops and forgotten corners of historic buildings. These behind-the-scenes experiences offered a fascinating understanding of the properties, their history and the generations who had lived and worked within them.

One of the greatest privileges was working alongside highly skilled craftspeople and conservation specialists, witnessing the painstaking restoration of paintings, tapestries, furniture and historic interiors. She also had opportunities to visit conservation studios and see important objects being prepared for exhibitions and international loans.

Among her many memories is a particularly remarkable Sea Dog table from Hardwick Hall, a piece that never failed to stop her in her tracks and which she later watched being prepared for an exhibition at Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Choosing a favourite property would be almost impossible. Each had its own atmosphere, remarkable collections and hidden stories, making every visit memorable in a different way.

Those years deepened Jackie's appreciation for historic craftsmanship, the importance of conservation and, above all, the extraordinary stories that objects and buildings carry with them — values that remain at the heart of Shackleton Fox today.

RESTORING OUR OWN PIECE OF HISTORY

Learning by Doing

Our journey began in 2016, when we took on the restoration of an eighteenth-century Grade II listed cottage in rural Lincolnshire. Little did we realise that this project would eventually lead to the creation of Shackleton Fox.

The house required extensive renovation. We stripped walls back to their original stone, learnt the traditional techniques of lime pointing and plastering, and even mastered the preparation of lime plaster incorporating horsehair. For almost two years, our evenings and weekends were devoted to the restoration, gradually developing skills that we had previously only admired in others.

We went on to design and build our own kitchen using elm, lay floors, undertake plumbing and work with conservation officers to ensure that alterations respected the building's historic character. It was a demanding but enormously rewarding experience, giving us a genuine appreciation for traditional materials, craftsmanship and the patience required to restore an old building properly.

As the rooms began to take shape, we started sourcing antiques from auctions and local fairs to furnish our home. Inevitably, we occasionally bought more than we needed, or discovered that a piece wasn't quite right for its intended room. We began selling these items through an online auction account, and were pleasantly surprised by how quickly our little venture developed.

Following the loss of Jackie's father in February 2017, and later her uncle John in 2021, continuing the family's connection with the antiques trade became increasingly meaningful. What had started as a practical way of furnishing our home gradually grew into something much more personal.

Since those early days, our weekends have been devoted to building Shackleton Fox, sourcing interesting pieces, developing our restoration skills and sharing our appreciation for antiques with customers around the world.

Looking back, restoring our home was far more than a building project. It was the beginning of a new chapter, one that brought together our love of historic buildings, traditional craftsmanship and antiques, and ultimately shaped the business we are so passionate about today.

TWO PERSPECTIVES, ONE SHARED PASSION

Complementary Skills

Jackie and Jonathan bring different backgrounds and complementary skills to Shackleton Fox, united by a shared passion for antiques, craftsmanship and historic interiors.

Jonathan's background in commercial finance is complemented by his practical restoration skills and meticulous attention to detail. Alongside workshop restoration and antique lighting rewiring, he oversees our dedicated photography studio, ensuring every piece is carefully documented, measured and photographed. He also manages worldwide shipping, from protective packaging and specialist couriers to international customs arrangements, recognising the often fragile and irreplaceable nature of the antiques we handle.

Jackie leads the sourcing and curation of our collections, drawing on her lifelong interest in antiques and experience in historic buildings and conservation. She manages our website developments, online galleries, product listings and marketing, alongside relationships with collectors, interior designers and trade clients around the world.

We particularly enjoy sourcing together, travelling throughout Britain and Europe in search of distinctive pieces. Our different perspectives help us recognise quality, character and value, ensuring every antique is thoughtfully selected.

Together, we remain personally involved in every stage, from discovery and restoration to presentation and delivery — an approach built on care, knowledge and a genuine appreciation for the objects we handle.

THE STORY BEHIND OUR NAME

A Name Rooted in History

The Shackleton Fox name brings together two family histories, each with fascinating connections to the past.

Research undertaken by Jonathan's late father identified a distant family connection to Sir Ernest Shackleton, the renowned Antarctic explorer. Although the precise relationship remains unknown, it is a treasured part of the family's history.

On Jackie's side, research by her uncle John traced a connection to Florence Nightingale through her paternal grandmother's Wood family line. The exact relationship has yet to be established.

Our family crest bears the Latin motto Una Crescimus — Together We Grow. These words reflect the shared passion, complementary skills and values upon which Shackleton Fox has been built, alongside our belief in preserving history and craftsmanship for future generations.
