A Fine Charles II Oak Gate-Leg Dining Table, circa 1680

An exceptional and rare Charles II oak gate-leg table, dating to approximately 1680. This piece is a quintessential example of late 17th-century furniture, boasting an impressive scale and a rich, deep "plum-pudding" patina that can only be achieved through centuries of wax polishing and careful use.

The table features a solid oak top with two deep falling leaves, which, when extended, create a generous oval dining surface supported by a double-gate action. The underframe is a masterclass in Baroque proportion, featuring:

• Turned Baluster Legs: Beautifully articulated ring-turned baluster supports that provide both stability and aesthetic elegance.

• Spanish 'Braganza' Feet: A highly desirable and sophisticated feature, these scrolled feet (introduced to England via the influence of Catherine of Braganza) elevate the piece above more common examples from the period.

• The Drawer: A single frieze drawer to the end, retaining an early turned handle. The drawer construction reveals hand-cut dovetails and traditional side-hung runners, consistent with 17th-century joinery.

• The Timber: Constructed from high-quality English "Wainscot" oak with a heavy grain and wonderful medullary rays visible across the top.

The gate-leg table was a revolutionary development in the 17th century, moving away from the static, heavy trestle tables of the Middle Ages toward more "polite" and flexible dining. This specific piece was crafted during the Restoration period, a time of renewed luxury in England following the return of Charles II.

Provenance: This piece carries impeccable mid-market history, having been handled by the noted Harrogate dealer Bill Bentley in 1987. It was acquired for the significant sum of £2,400 at that time (equivalent to roughly £7,500 today), reflecting its superior quality even decades ago. The original bill of sale from September 10th, 1987, accompanies the piece, providing a rare and continuous link to its 20th-century custody.

Condition Report

The table is presented in remarkably good, country-house condition, exhibiting the sturdy construction and structural integrity expected of high-quality late 17th-century joinery. It remains perfectly functional for daily use.

The oak boards possess an exceptional, deep-burnished patina. There are minor historical "battle scars" to the surface, including small indentations, faint ring marks, and localised surface scratches consistent with over 340 years of use. These have been softened by centuries of waxing and are considered highly desirable.

The gate-leg action is smooth and remains well-tensioned. The leaves sit remarkably level when extended, with only the slight, charming variation typical of hand-planed 17th-century timber.
