A charming and increasingly sought-after Staffordshire pottery tobacco jar in the form of a seated pug dog, dating to the late Victorian or Edwardian period, circa 1900.
Beautifully modelled with the distinctive features associated with the breed, the pug is portrayed seated with an alert expression, bulging eyes, wrinkled brow, and characteristic broad muzzle. The removable head forms the lid of the tobacco jar, a popular novelty design produced by Staffordshire potteries during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Finished in cream and white glazes with hand-painted detailing to the face, collar, paws, and features, the piece displays an attractive craquelure to the glaze, consistent with its age.
