A spectacular and highly decorative pair of late 19th-century Italian Majolica ceramic table lamps, beautifully configured as elegant bedside or salon lights. Each lamp features a finely potted, spherical ceramic body supported by substantial, Ornate Rococo/Renaissance style gilt brass bases featuring scrolling acanthus feet and geometric engine-turned collars.
The tin-glazed ceramic bodies are masterfully decorated by hand with intricate, classical iconography. The central focal medallions feature beautifully executed grisaille miniatures of a winged putto or cherub riding a mythical sea monster (dolphin), framed within an ornate cobalt blue, ochre, and manganese cartouche held by two classical grotesque sea-nymphs. The reverse and sides of the globes are filled with vibrant, whimsical Renaissance Revival grotesques, including a fierce winged griffin, and a classical heraldic dragon.
Presented with premium, neutral pleated fabric shades from our own range of handmade shades, these statement lamps offer a perfect blend of historic fine art and grand-tour luxury. Their symmetrical presence and sophisticated palette make them an ideal choice for high-end interior projects, injecting timeless narrative texture onto bedside tables, console tables, or library desks.
Lampshades not included but can be purchased separately.
Material & Craftsmanship:
Hand-painted, tin-glazed earthenware (Majolica/Maiolica). The artwork demonstrates exceptional brush control, utilising a traditional Renaissance palette of cobalt blue, antimony yellow, iron red, and manganese.Heavy cast brass or bronze with a rich, soft gold finish.
History & Origin:
Origin: Italy (likely manufactured in famed ceramic centres such as Deruta, Urbino, or Castelli).
Style: Renaissance Revival (Neo-Renaissance) / Grand Tour.
Age: Late 19th Century (circa 1880–1900).
Historical Context: In the late 19th century, wealthy European travelers on the "Grand Tour" fueled a massive revival of interest in 16th-century Italian High Renaissance art. Ateliers across Italy responded by crafting exquisite revival pieces that replicated the intricate "grotesque" style originally popularized by Raphael. Lighting of this calibre was custom-mounted with fine metals to serve as luxurious decorative statements in grand Victorian and Edwardian estates. Today, pairs of this quality are incredibly rare and highly sought after by international designers for their curated, historic character.
This pair of lamps has been fully and professionally conserved within our workshop.
The hand-painted bodies are structurally sound and retain magnificent color vibrancy. In keeping with their age and authentic handmade nature, there is minor, stable glaze popping and historic surface wear to the enamel as visible under close inspection, which only authenticates their antique status and adds to their rich character.
The electrical components have been completely replaced and modernised. Both lamps have been rewired with premium braided flex, fitted with solid brass UK bulb holders, and officially PAT inspected to UK safety standards, ensuring they are entirely safe and ready for immediate use.
